A rare and important 19th Century marble sculpture by the Italian sculptor and architect Donato Barcaglia; who was considered one of the most important 19th Century Italian sculptors. Barcaglia studied at the Accademia di Berera Arti di Brera in Milan and many of his works have been exhibited internationally; often being compared to Canova. The piece shows children at play and it has quite a beautiful level of detail, as well as a deeper level of composition. A similar piece was sold by Christies in September 2004 and also at Sotheby's June 1990. The piece we have at English Salvage has been in a private garden for many years. There are some losses to the figure's limbs, as shown in the photographs. The piece is nicely weathered. (Please note the stone plinth base is sold separately).
