The Victorians and Edwardians made a wide range of terracotta lawn edgings in many different patterns and colours. The most common are the barley twist or rope top edgings, but scalloped and roll top patterns are also widespread. Colours range from black (often called blue or staffordshire), to red or buff, which is the most common colour for edgings made by Doulton and Co. Occassionally we also come across 19th Century lawn edgings made from stone or slate, including naturalistic ones carved to resemble logs.
