A pair of early city of London armorial stone dragons. These two armorial dragons reputedly came from the old London wall and were sold to two grand estates in Northumberland in 1760 from the demolition of the medieval London gates on the London wall. They probably sat in alcoves, which is supported by the fact that one side of the head of the dragon is less detailed so probably faced towards a wall. The coat of arms on the shield are those of the city of London, and there is also a long-time association with dragons protecting the city. The style of carving would suggest a great age. Beautifully weathered with lichen. Overall measurements are listed below. The lions measure: 50cm (w) x 74cm (d).
