Antique stone statue from a Hindu temple in Tamil Nadu. The simply carved statue depicts a fishtail god, perhaps the Matsya or fish avatar - one of the ten primary avatars or incarnations of the God Vishnu whose vehicle was a peacock or Garuda represented by the creature behind the fishgod - or another of the fish gods in Hinduism. Normally Matsya is depicted with more than one pair of arms, suggesting that this portrayal is more likely to be one of the other fish god. The stone remains well defined with chips and dinks commensurate with its age and is an interesting piece of Hindu art.
